I am a senior merchant navy officer and I underwent cataract/refractive eye treatment at this clinic in April 2026 after being advised that the procedure and multifocal lens would help me achieve spectacle-free vision. I relied on this representation and spent approximately Rs.2.5 lakh on the treatment.

Unfortunately, even after the procedure, I continued to require spectacles and also experienced significant glare, halos/scattered light and difficulty with night vision, making it difficult for me to drive safely at night.

Dr. Shamik Ambatkar replied

Mr. Pathak has been implanted with an Alcon panoptix clareon IOL( one of the best lenses in the world)in both his eyes that had, potentially difficult, posterior polar cataracts. The pre operative counselling was done amply, to his satisfaction, so that he could take an informed decision. His preoperative evaluation was done on the Zeiss IOL master; one of the best systems in the world which gives us very little margin for error. His surgery was uneventful, and we are sure, when he took opinions elsewhere, no one must have found a flaw in the operative, too. The patient was clearly told about the side effects, of glare and haloes, a common symptom with the multifocal IOLs, which are least with the Alcon panoptix IOLs. Most patients overcome these symptoms over a period of time as they adapt to the new vision. Having implanted these lenses in hundreds of our patients, there isn’t a single dissatisfied patient as they all easily overcame the minimal discomfort, generally perceived during night driving. We generally share these experiences with all our patients before they opt for multifocal IOLs. The patient read 6/6 ; N6 after the YAG laser procedure which is done for all patients at varied intervals of time (usually done between 3 months to 3 years). A residual refraction was prescribed in this patient who had come with a technically difficult cataract ( posterior polar cataract), where doing such a high quality surgery in itself is difficult. In fact, because of such a cataract the patient already had symptoms of glare and haloes and visual acuity of less than 6/12 unaided. We feel his is a case of being over anxious and his expectations keep trailing the amount that he spent in getting the surgery done. Nothing was done forcefully, and never, arrogantly. We respect every patient and their decisions. Every procedure is done taking due care and after an informed consent. We treat our patients as patients, and ‘not customers’. Legality is less understood by us as we give more importance to relationships. Mr. Pathak was referred to us by a very good friend of ours, who once was only a patient to us. WE believe in developing a better relationship with all our patients so that they can confidently share their grievances with us. We strive hard in maintaining high standards and try to perform to the best of our abilities to alleviate the pain with which our patients come to us. We are still hopeful that Mr. Pathak, turns around and comes back to hold our hand firmly so that whatever little problems he is facing will be taken care of by us. In patient care since 20 years at Shaureen Advanced eye care, we pray to lord almighty to bestow us with enough strength and success in managing our patients.

Patient’s treatments are never tailor made to suit their ‘attendant’s comfort. A scientific and swift approach is adopted to examine and investigate, at our hospital, taking care that even a novice, or a layman will be able to understand the nature of the disease affecting the patient’s eye. Meting out placebo treatments to gain a patient’s confidence is strictly avoided. It is never about buying patients confidence. It is about giving them the best and relieving them off their suffering from the disease. Only, just investigations, absolutely necessary, are advised and we try arduously to convince the patient to go the length of treatment to get the desired result of health. The patient cannot, and should never dictate the treatment. Weighing of the options of treatment suggested by the treating doctor, is of course, their domain. Finally, we sincerely believe, ‘Trust is the key to a successful outcome’.
