Description

Orthokind 200 mg Tablet is an antimalarial medication that is used for the treatment as well as prophylaxis of malaria. It is also used for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (a joint disorder) and systemic lupus erythematosus (an autoimmune disease), especially if other medicines are not effective. Recently the US-FDA has issued an unapproved use of this medicine for the treatment of patients with mild, moderate, and severe Coronavirus Disease COVID-19 caused by the new coronavirus. Do not use this medicine to treat COVID-19 unless directed by the doctor. All the risks and benefits should be discussed with the doctor in such cases.

How it works
This medicine works by increasing the concentration of a toxic molecule in the malarial parasite thus inhibits the growth of the parasite. It is also believed to block the release of chemical substances that cause inflammation and hence used in the treatment of autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. In clinical trials for COVID-19, this medicine showed antiviral activity where it prevents virus entry by acting on the target receptors for cell entry.
