Description
Septran DS Tablet is an antibiotic composed of Trimethoprim and Sulfamethoxazole. It is used in children (above 12 years of age) and adults for treating various bacterial infections. It works by preventing the growth of bacteria, thus reducing the infection.
Septran DS Tablet can cause side effects like nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, headache, etc. Most of these side effects are temporary and subside on their own. Consult your doctor if these side effects persist or become worse.
Septran DS Tablet is usually taken with food or as prescribed by your doctor. Your doctor will determine the dose and duration of treatment depending on your condition. Try taking it at the same time every day to maintain a constant level of medicine in your body. Do not stop taking Septran DS Tablet without consulting your doctor as it may lead to re-infection that would be difficult to treat.
Septran DS Tablet is not recommended for use if you are allergic to it, or have severe liver/kidney problems. Inform your doctor about your current medications or any other medical conditions that you have before starting the treatment. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or are breastfeeding.

What is it prescribed for?
Pneumocystis Jiroveci Pneumonia
Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) is a serious lung infection caused by the fungus Pneumocystis jirovecii. It mainly occurs if you have a weak immune system due to illness or other health conditions. Septran DS Tablet is used for the treatment and prevention of Pneumocystis pneumonia.
Toxoplasmosis
Toxoplasmosis is a condition that results from infection with the Toxoplasma gondii parasite. The symptoms include muscle pain, fever, and headache. Septran DS Tablet is used in the treatment and prevention of toxoplasmosis.
Nocardiosis
Nocardiosis refers to the infection caused by bacteria found in soil and water. It can affect the lungs, brain, and skin. It is most common in people with a weak immune system who have difficulty fighting off infections. Septran DS Tablet is used to treat this condition.
Acute uncomplicated urinary tract infection (UTI)
Acute uncomplicated UTI is a sudden inflammation (swelling) of the urinary bladder, an organ that stores urine. It can be caused due to viral or bacterial infection. Septran DS Tablet is used to treat acute uncomplicated urinary tract infections caused by bacteria.

Acute otitis media
Acute otitis media is an infection of the middle ear, the air-filled space behind the eardrum that contains the tiny vibrating bones of the ear. It can be accompanied by ear pain and fever. Septran DS Tablet is used in the treatment of acute otitis media caused by bacteria.
Traveller's diarrhoea
Traveller's diarrhoea is a stomach and intestinal infection that causes loose stools and stomach cramps. It is caused by eating contaminated food or drinking contaminated water, especially while travelling. Septran DS Tablet is used for the treatment of this condition.
Granuloma inguinale

Diarrhoea
Septran DS Tablet can cause diarrhoea because it may also kill the helpful bacteria in your stomach or intestine. Inform your doctor if you experience severe diarrhoea during the treatment with this medicine.
Hyperkalaemia
Septran DS Tablet may increase the blood potassium levels in some cases. Hence, your doctor may monitor your blood potassium levels closely while you are taking this medicine.
Use in children
Septran DS Tablet is not recommended for use in children below 12 years of age as the safety and efficacy data are not clinically established.
Crystalluria
The use of Septran DS Tablet may cause crystalluria (cloudy urine) due to the precipitation of this medicine in the urinary tract (the organs that produce, store and then remove urine from the body). This risk is especially higher if you are dehydrated. Therefore, drink plenty of water while you are taking this medicine.
Missed Dose
Take the missed dose of Septran DS Tablet as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not double your dose to make up for the missed one.
Overdose
Seek emergency medical treatment in case of an overdose of Septran DS Tablet.
