The condition in which the nerves are affected is called neuropathy. It occurs when there is damage to the nerves that connect the brain and spinal cord to the different parts of the body.

Apart from a regular physical examination, routine blood tests and a medical history assessment, the doctor will perform a neurological examination to assess tendon reflexes, muscle tone, sensation and posture to diagnose neuropathy.

The symptoms of neuropathy depend mainly upon the nerve or the type of nerves that are affected. The common symptoms include gradual numbness; tingling sensations; sharp pains; sensitivity to certain stimuli, such as touch; lack of coordination, etc.

There are four main types of neuropathy - peripheral, autonomic, mononeuropathy, thoracic and lumbar root neuropathies - depending upon the type of nerve or nerves affected. Peripheral neuropathy is the most common type and mainly affects the extremities.

Vitamins B-1, B-6 and B-12 can be used for treating as well as preventing neuropathy. Vitamin supplements can be taken along with conventional therapy.
