Ulcerative collitis is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease due to inflammation in the large intestine and rectum characterized by pain and diarrhoea.

Signs and symptoms in ulcerative colitis are abdominal pain, stools which are loose, frequent and bloody, rectal pain with increased abdominal sounds, weight loss and malnutrition. Other symptoms include fever, joint pains, nausea and decreased appetite.

Definitive cause of ulcerative colitis is not known but it could be due to overactive immune system. Sometimes it can also happen post severe bacterial or fungal infection.

Other complications like severe bleeding, sepsis, dehydration due to diarrhoea, toxic megacolon, thickening of intestinal walls with tendency to rupture of colon can also occur.
