Fillers are used to improve volume and fullness of cheeks or lips. They are injected below the skin surface. Fillers are also used to reduce wrinkles, and lessen the appearance of scars. Fillers can provide permanent or temporary results.

Polymethylmethacrylate beads, collagen, poly-L-lactic acid, calcium hydroxylapatite and hyaluronic acid are materials that have been approved for use in fillers. Their effects vary from 3-4 months to 6-12 months, depending upon the material and individual metabolism.

Fillers are not approved for enhancing breasts or other muscles. Using them for enhancement might cause permanent disfigurement or scars and even cause death in extreme cases.

People commonly experience bruising, allergic reactions, itching, swelling, redness, and scarring or infection in the skin as side-effects of fillers. In some cases, the fillers also produce tiny bumps under the skin.

Side-effects of fillers occur within a few hours after the fillers have been injected. The side- effects subside within two weeks. In some cases, the side-effects can last for up to many days or even years. Talk to your cosmetologist if you experience a side-effect.
