After Root canal treatment there are chances that the tooth might become brittle at the edges and it might chip or fracture at some angles so therefore if it protected with the crown then it has more strength to take the loads subjected to it while chewing food. That's the reason why it should be protected with a crown. Secondly the crown gives the tooth added strength at the contact areas so that further good lodgement is prevented in the areas which are prone for decay.
