When every month the body prepares for pregnancy and if no pregnancy occurs, the uterus, or womb, sheds its lining and exhibits normal vaginal bleeding called Menstruation or Period. The menstrual blood is partly blood and partly tissue from inside the uterus.
Menstrual Cycle has much more to it than just getting periods every month. Often it is a 28-day cycle, and it can vary between 24 and 34 days. If the menstrual cycle is shorter than 24 days, more than 38 days long, or if the length varies significantly from month to month, it is termed as oligomenorrhea or irregular periods. These can be caused commonly due to hormonal imbalance, on medications for conditions like PCOD etc. and sometimes having a very low or high body weight, exercising too much are often to blame but your provider can make a definitive diagnosis.
