Did you know when your mom was seven-week pregnant your entire skeleton was laid out? We bet you were not aware of this fact until now.

Your bones are amazingly engineered parts of the human body and are a source of inspiration  for many engineers out there. There are many such interesting facts that you should know about them. Read to know more…

1) Bones are stronger than steel and concrete

Yes! You heard it right, bones are stronger than steel and concrete. They have a greater strength-to-weight ratio than steel. Their composition of collagen and calcium hydroxyapatite gives them the right amount of flexibility and rigidity they need to perform their work.

However, the question arises why they break despite their strength. The explanation is simply that they are low in density which is needed for the movement of fluids in and out of bone.

This low density makes them prone to breakage if some strains surpass their strength.

2) You lose some bones

When you were born you had 300 bones but ended up with 206. Wondering how it could happen. This is because many bones like those in your skull fuse together with time as you grow young.

3) Women’s skeleton is slightly different from those of men

Although men and women have the same structure and function of the skeletal system, the women's skeleton system is slightly different in shape, size, and angle of the pelvis. This difference is only because they have to give birth to a child.

4) Some joints have no movement

You know that joints are responsible for the free movement of the body. However, there are some joints that do not have the ability to move like the cranium joints (present in your skull).

5) When hitting your elbow hurts so much. Why?

When you get a smack at your elbow it causes prickly unpleasant pain. Most of you have the misconception that it is the funny bone that causes the pain.

It turns out that funny bone is actually not a bone, however, how its name was derived is unknown and has many theories.

It is actually an ulnar nerve (which runs inside your elbow to pass the message to your arms and fingers) that causes the pain.

So, next time you hit your elbow and felt an unpleasant sensation blame your ulnar nerve.

These facts are just the tip of the iceberg. Your bones are a complex part of your body and there is a lot more to explore about them.
