Advances in surgical care have significantly reduced the physical and emotional trauma of operations. But recovery doesn’t end in the operating room — post-operative care is crucial for a full and healthy comeback.

Here’s how to take care of yourself or a loved one after surgery:

1. Follow medical advice closely

Take medications as prescribed. Attend all follow-ups. If physiotherapy is advised, don’t skip it. Pain and swelling at the surgical site are normal in the first few days — taking medicine on time helps ease discomfort.

2. Care for the wound properly

Keep the surgical area clean and dry. Don’t touch the wound with bare hands. Wash hands thoroughly before changing dressings. Watch for redness, pain, or discharge — these could be signs of infection.

3. Eat well, stay hydrated.

Focus on home-cooked, nutritious meals. Avoid alcohol ,smoking, and processed foods.

4. Move, but don’t overdo it.

Be gentle with your body. Any movement should stop if you feel pain. Check with your doctor before resuming exercise.

5. Prioritize mental well-being

Stay connected with friends and family. If you feel anxious or low, talk to someone or seek support. Treat yourself with patience. Healing takes time — but your comeback can be strong.
