Cervical spondylitis or ankylosing spondylitis is an inflammatory condition that affects the cervical spine and is also known as Stiff neck. Cervical spondylitis causes progressive stiffness and pain in the neck, upper shoulder, or arm. Cervical spondylitis progressed to fusion on the cervical intervertebral joint and gives a bamboo-like appearance in X-ray.In Cervical spondylitis, there is pain which worsens with rest and improves with movement. Pain is more in the night and the morning. The stiffness can persist for more than 30 min in the morning and become better with the activity.Complications of cervical spondylitis can be vertebral fractures, weight loss, fatigue, uveitis, etc.In cervical spondylitis due to inflammation of the spine and its progression spine become fuse with each other and you lose a lot of range of motion.The goals of physiotherapy in cervical spondylitis are to reduce pain, improve stiffness, and maintain joint Range Of Motion. Physiotherapy for cervical spondylitis is Neck rotations (you can assist with your handsfor giving pressure), Chin tucks (you also can give pressure with hands to givean extra stretch to the posterior neck muscles), also you can progress chintucks by doing this on lying and keep one pillow under your head and then perform chin tucks. Thoracic expansion exercise (you can do this with the helpof a foam roller or you can make a towel roll and place it under your upper back and lie down on it now expand your arm sideways), Deep breathing exercises, superman exercise (this exercise will give strength to your neck,upper back as well as lower back muscle and also provide stability to core muscles), posture correction exercises, Stretching of chest and shoulder muscles, Mobilization of the spine (it will increase and maintain mobility,strength, power of the muscle and functionality), Myofascial release therapy, Chiropractic treatment,  Physiotherapists also use some modalities to relieve your symptoms such as cold packs, class 4 Laser, Ultrasonic therapy, Functional Cupping therapy, Acupuncture, Stiff neck or cervical spondylitis can be prevented with lifestyle changes, modification in ergonomics, avoid poor posture, regular exercises, quitting smoking.
