Many parents think nebulization is required for every cough and cold. This is not true.

Nebulization is mainly helpful when there is narrowing of the airways causing:

  • Wheezing
  • Fast breathing
  • Chest tightness
  • Difficulty breathing

Conditions where nebulization may help:

  • Wheezing-associated respiratory illness
  • Asthma
  • Bronchiolitis (selected cases)
  • Allergic airway symptoms

Simple cold with only runny nose or mild cough usually does not need repeated nebulization.

Important points:

  • Nebulization is not “oxygen” treatment
  • Overuse without indication should be avoided
  • Steam inhalation should be done carefully in children to avoid burns

Seek urgent medical care if child has:

  • Rapid breathing
  • Chest retractions
  • Bluish lips
  • Inability to feed or speak properly
