Among people with Chronic Liver Diseases, Liver Cirrhosis is one of the most important causes behind illness and mortality. Although the most leading cause of Cirrhosis Globally is Viral Hepatitis, on the other hand Alcoholic Liver Diseases and Non-alcoholic Liver Diseases are increasing in various regions of the Globe. The number of deaths worldwide due to Liver Diseases are increasing year by year. This is the high time we have to switch on our ancient science that is Ayurveda - more than 3000 years old science. Greater attempts are required to make possible early prevention, detection and management as well. Nothing is impossible with Ayurveda, including Liver Cirrhosis treatment in Ayurveda.
Major causes we have discussed above, other than that there are number of causes including Autoimmune hepatitis, Primary biliary cholangitis, Primary sclerosing cholangitis, Hemochromatosis, Wilson's disease, Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, Bile Duct Cancer, Certain toxins, Type II Diabetes, Family history of Liver Disease, etc. These causes may leads to Fatty Liver as well as other complications such as Liver Cirrhosis and Portal Hypertension, Esophageal Varices, Thrombocytopenia (Low Platelet Count), Anaemia (Low Haemoglobin Levels), etc.
If we talk about pathophysiology of Liver Cirrhosis as per modern science, its very complex. Hepatitis and Fatty Liver are the conditions that follow cirrhosis; in cirrhosis, the normal parenchyma is replaced by scar tissue. The specialised function of stellate cells is to store vitamin A. It plays a major role in the formation of Cirrhosis. Stellate cells are activated when the parenchyma of the liver is damaged by hepatic cell inflammation. This process blocks blood flow and increases Fibrosis. Fibrosis follows inflammation and necrosis in the case of chronic damage. In addition to activated platelets, the process primarily requires the activation of injured hepatocytes, kupffer cells, and stellate cells.
If we talk about its Patho-physiology as per Ayurveda, it's very simple and as simple is the Liver Cirrhosis treatment in Ayurveda. According to Ayurveda, the patho-physiology of Udara Roga or Abdominal Diseases and Liver Cirrhosis are the same. Defective Digestive Fire and Increase in waste products are two of the main causes of Udara Roga or Abdominal Diseases. Indigestion is caused by consuming viruddha ahara or inappropriate food, when one's Digestive Fire is vitiated. This causes accumulation of Doshas and further results in blockage of circulatory channels and vitiation of Digestive fire, Prana Vayu (Vital Force), and Apana Vayu (Vata responsible for elimination of wastes from lower orifices of the body). Following that, vitiated doshas deposit within the skin and muscle, causing the lower abdomen to sag and giving rise to a number of abdominal illnesses, including Ascites-associated Liver Cirrhosis.
