Quite often women are in a dilemma whether or not they should approach their gynecologist with certain problems they are facing. In this video, Dr. Arockia Fernando lists out the problems that require gynecologists’ consultation. She also emphasizes on the importance of consulting a gynecologist on a regular basis.

Every woman, in her life passes through physiologically important phases such as menarche, pregnancy, and menopause. During each phase, there are multiple issues that she may suffer from. Many women often go through these changes either without understanding them or by ignoring them. Consulting a gynecologist is very important to understand these concerns and to get clarity on their situation.

In the video, Dr. Fernando emphasizes on the age at which women should begin their regular gynecology consultations. She adds that in India, women usually avoid consulting a gynecologist unless there is some serious problem or they plan their visit to a gynecologist only when they are planning to start a family. Furthermore, she says that since no two women are the same their problems will also differ and hence, women should consider seeking gynecologists’ help with a more free and open mind. She speaks about a few common problems women need professional expertise, which include:

  • Menarche and the related issues
  • Importance of awareness of sexual health
  • Family planning (planning the pregnancy, methods of contraception, and sterilization)
  • Menopausal issues

Dr. Fernando also says that since a regular gynecologist check up also includes screening for serious medical conditions such as cervical cancer and breast cancer, routine check-ups will help detect these at the earliest and start the treatment.
