Fall injuries are very common after the age of 60. Fall often increase the health problems of older age group. It can create a fear in elderly and limit their activities.Physiotherapy provides fall prevention program which the patient have to take on weekly basis followed by home exercise plan. It includes strength training mainly the knee muscle, back muscles,balance training, gait training(walking) exercises.
A study by M Gardner in New Zealand provides the evidence that fall prevention exercises are effective in lowering fall risk.
Few of the exercises includes
- Standing on one leg with support in front .
- weight shifting exercises - stand with feet apart (approximately four finger gap) then gently shift weight to one side by lifting the other leg slightly above the ground. Keep the foot back to the ground , repeat this on both sides.
- Figure of 8 exercise - stand with support in front, with one leg try to make a figure of 8 on floor. Do this exercise alternatively in both legs.
Regular exercises under the guidance of Physiotherapist helps the patient to build strength and confidence.
