Dry needling is an invasive procedure in which very thin needle filaments are inserted into the 'trigger points' to cure the pain.
'Trigger points' are hyper-irritable knots in muscle that once pressed cause radiating pain in their pattern.
How does it work?
As the needle is inserted into the trigger point and kept for 5-10 mins followed by the stretch.
This clears the trigger point causing an increase in blood flow followed by muscle repair and inducing natural pain relief.
Is the procedure painful?
Maximum patients don’t even feel the insertion of the needle rather there is a twitch felt at the site which is a good sign that the trigger point is getting released.
Patients could experience some soreness at that point for which the therapist asks the patient to do a cold pack 2-3 times a day for 4 mins which relieve the discomfort of soreness (if any).
Conditions helped by dry needling
Dry needling can help a variety of musculoskeletal conditions in an acute or chronic stage like tendinitis, arthritis, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, golfer elbow, knee pain, post-fracture conditions, ACL tear, calf pain, plantar fascitis, or any condition involving either muscle or bone.
It can also be beneficial in any neurological condition etc.
Side effects
There are NO side effects as such. This is contraindicated in certain patients with cardiac arrhythmia, and uncontrollable diabetes if the patient is scared of needles.
Who can practice dry needling??
A certified dry needling therapist is only eligible to perform this practice.
