When one reads the heading of the blog “Do you have to wear a retainer forever after Invisalign?” he/she would be puzzled when he/she comes across the word “Invisalign”. For those who might not be much of an expert or who have very little knowledge about Dental procedures, Invisalign might be an alien term. So first let’s get to know what Invisalign is before dwelling much into the topic.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a dental procedure that helps to straighten a person’s teeth without using metal braces. When a person uses metal braces he/she might not feel comfortable making a smile as they might not like people seeing the metal brace fixed to their teeth structure. When using Invisalign the patient needs to wear tailor-made plastic aligners that help to fix their teeth into the proper position.

Advantages and Disadvantages

As in the case of other procedures, Invisalign also has some advantages and disadvantages. The advantages of Invisalign include less discomfort because the patient would not be wearing wires and brackets, and the lesser threat of damage to the mouth as when the patient uses braces there is fairly a bigger risk of injury in the mouth, a patient needs to do fewer visits to the dentist.

Invisalign comes with the comfort of being easy to remove and maneuver, which is not available in braces and brackets. Not only that by wearing an Invisalign you can take any kind of food-hard or soft, but it also doesn’t matter a lot.

Even if the patient takes a hard substance the Invisalign does not get damaged. When one looks at the cost factor too, dentists may recommend the use of Invisalign as it is much more affordable rather than braces and brackets.

Is it costly?

The cost depends on how many aligners you need and how many visits you need to make to the dentist. When you wear an Invisalign you can continue to brush or floss your teeth, which might be difficult with braces or brackets for the case.

Why should I use retainers?

You can ask the question: why should I use retainers? Once the braces have been removed from the teeth there is every chance that the teeth might shift back to their original position, so wearing a retainer for long hours becomes a necessity for the benefit of the patients. Even though initially you may not see or feel your tooth changing its position if you fail to wear retainers in the later stage you may see a larger shift in the position of your teeth. You need to wear the retainer until adequate new bone gets deposited around your teeth creating stability.
