Sometimes, we get a bump on the head. It might happen if you fall while playing sports, get into a car accident, or have a slip at home. Usually, it hurts for a bit, but then everything is okay. But sometimes, a harder bump on the head can make your brain act a little funny. This is called a concussion.
What Happens Inside Your Head
Think of your brain like a bowl of jelly. It sits inside your skull, which is like a hard bowl. Your brain has a special liquid that keeps it comfy and protected. But, if you hit your head really hard, your brain can jiggle inside your skull. It's kind of like what happens if you shake a bowl of jelly too hard! This jiggling can hurt your brain a little bit. It might make you feel different for a while, but it usually gets better on its own.
How Will I Feel If I Have a Concussion?
Everyone feels a bit different after a concussion. Here are some things you might notice:
Headaches: Your head might hurt as if someone is squeezing it.
Feeling Dizzy: The room might feel like it's spinning.
Nausea: You might feel sick to your stomach or even throw up.
Trouble Thinking Clearly: Things might feel confusing or foggy in your head.
Seeing Stars or Blurry Vision: Your eyes might not work right for a bit.
Feeling Grumpy: You might get upset or sad easily.
What Should I Do?
The most important thing is to tell a grown-up right away. They can take you to the doctor, who will check to make sure you're okay. Doctors are experts on brains!
Most of the time, all you need is rest.
That means:
No Sports: Take a break from sports or activities that make you run around.
Quiet Time: Your brain needs to chill out. No loud TV or busy games.
Lots of Sleep: Sleep helps your brain heal faster.
Don't Worry, You'll Get Better Soon!
Concussions can be scary, but remember they usually get better in a few days or weeks. If you ever hit your head hard, make sure you tell a grown-up so they can help you feel all better.
