Chickenpox is a highly contagious viral infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV). It is most common in children but can also affect adults who have not been previously infected or vaccinated.

Symptoms of Chickenpox

  • Red, itchy rash that turns into fluid-filled blisters

  • The rash typically appears first on the chest, back, and face before spreading to other areas. 

How It Spreads

Prevention

  • Vaccination: The varicella vaccine is the best way to prevent chickenpox.
  • Isolation: Infected individuals should avoid contact with others, especially newborns, pregnant women, and people with weak immune systems.
  • Hygiene: Frequent handwashing and disinfecting surfaces can help prevent the spread.

Home Care & Treatment

  • Rest and hydration: 

Staying hydrated and getting plenty of rest helps recovery.

  • Relief from itching: 

Oatmeal baths, calamine lotion, and antihistamines can ease itching.

  • Avoid scratching: This prevents scarring and secondary infections.
  • Fever management: Paracetamol can help reduce fever (avoid aspirin in children, as it can cause complications).
  • Most cases resolve within 7-10 days, but consult a doctor if symptoms worsen or if an adult or immunocompromised individual gets infected.Stay informed, stay protected!
