Any teenager who harbours active Ideas of suicide and suicide attempts is usually associated with depression.

In addition to depression, other risk factors which may contribute to suicidal attempt in teenagers include:

  • acute parental loss or loss of attachment figure
  • rejection in relationships
  • maladaptive personality traits (impulsivity and aggression)
  • easy access to drugs and lethal weapons
  • family history of suicide attempts/completed suicides
  • exposure to violence and war zones
  • bullying at school/college
  • feelings of hopelessness or helplessness

It is not always easy to children and adolescents to openly discuss about suicidal ideas or plans. They usually make statements such as, "I wish I hadn't been born", "I wish I was dead’, "I won't be a problem for you much longer”, “I want to reunite with my parent”,

Parents must actively consult a psychiatrist to seek urgent intervention and implement suicide prevention strategies.
