Dental Caries is a universal disease, and there is no doubt that it is more prevalent in children today than past decades. The reason is change in lifestyle and  diet, which includes more of refined sugar and flour.

When a  child is in pain and unable to eat, parents try medicines to cure the problem. A common myth is that children teeth are milk teeth and hence will fall off after a certain period so there is no need of any dental treatment and medicines can be given till the exfoliation. Though the  pain will  subside for few days  but will present itself again after sometime. This happens because there is no medicine for treating dental caries, rather excessive usage of antibiotics may lead to antibiotic resistance in children and adversely affect their liver and kidney.

A simple alternative  is to take the child to a pediatric dental specialist and get the tooth treated. Once treated , some painkiller  maybe for prescribed few days  and problem subsides for ever.

Your Child needs his Milk teeth for-

1) Chewing food properly- Baby teeth exfoliate between 6-12 years of age . In case molars are missing in a child, he/she cannot chew properly and this leads to nutritional deficiency in children .

2) Esthetics - School going children may feel inferiority complex when other kids tease them for missing teeth.

3) Speech - Missing teeth may lead to speech problems as certain words need tongue touching anterior teeth - like 't', 'th' etc.

4) Growth and development of jaws -  Missing teeth lead to less growth of a particular jaw compared t other and may lead to malocclusion later.

5)Guides eruption of permanent teeth -Extraction of primary teeth  much before the eruption  of permanent teeth, leads to closure of space for permanent teeth and further leads to crowding in adolescence .
