Leukoplakia is a white patch in the mouth that doesn’t rub off and may indicate a precancerous condition. Though not all white patches are dangerous, recognizing leukoplakia early can help in preventing serious complications.
Here are five simple steps to identify it:
1. Persistent White Patches-Leukoplakia appears as white or grayish patches on the inner cheeks, tongue, gums, or floor of the mouth. These patches are firm and cannot be wiped off, unlike fungal infections. Any patch lasting more than 2 weeks should be evaluated.
2. Painless but Progressive -Most cases are painless in the beginning, making them easy to ignore. The lesion may grow slowly in size, which is often the first sign people notice.
3. Notice Surface Texture & Borders -Leukoplakia patches often feel raised, thickened, or leathery. Borders may be clearly defined or irregular. If you notice red areas within the white patch (called speckled leukoplakia), seek dental attention immediately, as this may carry a higher risk.
4. Assess Your Risk Factors -Common causes include tobacco use, alcohol, chronic cheek biting, and ill-fitting dentures. If you fall into these categories, conduct regular oral self-checks.
