The second trimester of pregnancy, which spans from weeks 13 to 26, is often considered the most comfortable phase. However, there are still several important things to be mindful of. If your doctor hasn’t already shared these points, here are some key aspects of the second trimester that should never be ignored:
1. Increased Energy and Well-being
Many women experience a burst of energy in the second trimester as morning sickness subsides. However, it’s important not to overdo it. Staying active is great, but rest and hydration are equally important.
2. Weight Gain and Appetite Changes
You will likely experience noticeable weight gain during this phase. Doctors typically advise gaining about 1 to 1.5 pounds (0.5 to 0.7 kg) per week. A balanced diet with a focus on healthy nutrients like folic acid, calcium, iron, and proteins is essential.
3. Fetal Movements Begin
By weeks 16 to 20, you may begin to feel your baby move. This is known as "quickening." These movements are a good indicator of the baby’s well-being. If you notice any sudden change or lack of movement later in the trimester, notify your doctor.
4. Watch for Common Symptoms
Some common symptoms during the second trimester can include:Heartburn or indigestion.Constipation due to hormonal changes slowing down the digestive system.Leg cramps and back pain caused by the growing uterus and weight gain.Light exercise, a proper diet, and plenty of water can help alleviate these.
5. Braxton Hicks Contractions
You might start to feel Braxton Hicks contractions, also known as “practice contractions,” as your uterus prepares for labor. They are typically irregular and painless but should not be confused with preterm labor. Any persistent or regular contractions should be reported to your doctor.
6. Blood Pressure and Gestational Diabetes Screening
Your doctor will monitor your blood pressure at every visit to check for signs of preeclampsia, a condition marked by high blood pressure that can occur in pregnancy. A glucose test between weeks 24-28 will also screen for gestational diabetes, a temporary form of diabetes that can affect pregnant women.
7. Round Ligament Pain
As your uterus expands, you might feel sharp pains in your lower abdomen or groin. This is often due to the stretching of ligaments that support the uterus. If the pain becomes severe or is accompanied by other symptoms like fever or bleeding, see your doctor.
8. Watch for Bleeding or Unusual Discharge

Mood swings can still occur in the second trimester, although they tend to lessen. However, if feelings of anxiety, sadness, or depression become persistent, speak to your healthcare provider. Perinatal depression is a serious condition that should be addressed early.
10. Prenatal Visits and TestsAnatomy Scan (around 18-22 weeks):
This detailed ultrasound will check the baby’s organs, bones, and overall development.Quad Screen: This blood test can help detect certain genetic disorders like Down syndrome.Amniocentesis (if recommended): A diagnostic test for detecting chromosomal abnormalities.
11. Dental Care
Pregnancy hormones can affect your gums, making you more prone to gingivitis and other dental issues. Regular dental checkups and good oral hygiene are crucial during pregnancy to prevent complications.
12. Avoid Certain Medications and Foods
Even though some symptoms like headaches, colds, or indigestion may persist, certain over-the-counter medications should still be avoided. Always consult your doctor before taking any new medication. Similarly, keep avoiding undercooked meat, unpasteurized dairy, raw fish, and high-mercury seafood.

The second trimester is often considered the safest time to travel. However, before making travel plans, especially if flying, consult your doctor.
