Colon cancers are usually due to a mutation in the DNA, leading to uncontrolled growth. The risk factors for colon cancer include a strong family history, advancing age, a diet high in fats and low in fibre, diabetes, smoking, alcohol and obesity.

The treatment measures for colon cancer include chemotherapy and radiation therapy along with surgery. Surgical options are removal of polyps or polypectomy, endoscopic mucosal resection and partial removal of the colon.

As with all cancer treatments, side effects, such as hair loss, loss of appetite, weight loss, anaemia, nausea and vomiting, will be seen. Post-surgery complications, such as blood loss, infections and sepsis, can also be observed.

The duration of the treatment of colon cancers depend on the intensity of the symptoms and the stage of the disease. Treatment can generally last from a few months to years.
