What is epiglottis function in digestive system
I am a 14 year old student who loves science. As I was going through the texts, I came across the individual characteristics of each system in our body. I was going through the Digestive system chart and they had highlighted epiglottis in the diagram. What exactly is the function of epiglottis in the digestive system? Why is it important? What will happen if it is absent in out body?

The Epiglottis is similar to a lid to cover the Glottis during the act if Deglutition(Swallowing), so that food or water does not enter the trachea. If you did not have an epiglottis, you would soon be dead due to extensive pneumonitis!
