Dear Doctor, I have some cotton and would like to know how I can use it for noise cancellation at home. Are there any additional materials or techniques you recommend to make it more effective for blocking noise? Thank you!

Yes cotton can be used as a crude method of noise cancellation but at times a small piece of cotton in the ear can be difficult to remove and it can get pushed deeper into the ear canal. For protection of ears from continuous loud sounds for example at factories, construction sites, we usually advise noise cancellation headphones or earmuffs. You can use those at home.
