Hi there.. thumb sucking is common in children.. most of the children give up by 5 years of age..A child usually turns to the thumb when bored, tired, or upset. Thumb-sucking also can lead to dental problems. A child who is still thumb-sucking by age 5, when permanent teeth start coming in, may develop an abnormal dentition, some children develop speech problems like troubles with the "S" sound and other "tongue-tip" sounds.. you can break the habit faster if the child supports.. you can make him participate in this by bribing him gifts and encouraging him to give up on sucking and for every single sucking free day, offer him prizes, gifts which would encourage him to leave the habit. It is also helpful to place a bitter-tasting liquid on the nail so that he stops sucking in night and the habit is broken.. if it persists beyond 5 years please consult psychiatrist once.
