Doctor Answers (1) on Suger issue
Thank you for your question regarding insulin use in gestational diabetes.
Self home blood glucose monitoring in pregnancy should be done with at least 5 readings fasting, 2 hrs post breakfast, 2 hrs post lunch and 2 hours post dinner and at 3 am in the morning for 3 days.
One single abnormal reading is no indication of discontinuation of medication or therapy change. In addition, please be careful regarding symptoms of Hypoglycemia (keep sweets with her at all times) and note fetal movements judiciously.
It would be helpful for your treating Obstetrician if you log the blood sugar results till the next visit, so that she could adjust the dosage of insulin accordingly.
Please note that the degree of insulin resistance will increase with increasing gestational age thus affecting maternal and fetal outcomes, hence blood sugar monitoring is a must.
