Suger issue
Mt wife is 34 week pregnent. Her suger levels are 95-100 in fasting and 130-140 after food. Doctor asked to take insulin and decrease it. We started it amd on first day after taking insulin suger level after food shot to 166. Is it normal. This looks scary. Please advise shall we continue with insulin?

Dear Sir, Thank you for your question regarding insulin use in gestational diabetes. Self home blood glucose monitoring in pregnancy should be done with at least 5 readings fasting, 2 hrs post breakfast, 2 hrs post lunch and 2 hours post dinner and at 3 am in the morning for 3 days. One single abnormal reading is no indication of discontinuation of medication or therapy change. In addition, please be careful regarding symptoms of Hypoglycemia (keep sweets with her at all times) and note fetal movements judiciously. It would be helpful for your treating Obstetrician if you log the blood sugar results till the next visit, so that she could adjust the dosage of insulin accordingly. Please note that the degree of insulin resistance will increase with increasing gestational age thus affecting maternal and fetal outcomes, hence blood sugar monitoring is a must. Regards, Aditi
