Steroids inj at spinal cd
Hello, My dad was having lot of pain in his legs. After his ultrasound, we got to know that there was a slip disc at his hip joint and the spinal cord has a small cyst. Since the pain has not subsided much even after physiotherapy, doc has suggested to give sterouds injection at spinal cord. Please let me know if it is fine and there would not be any side effects due to this injection. My dad is a heart patient so i m being extra cereful. Thanks.

Slip disc or disc prolapse is condition where the cartilage between two vertebra bulges out of its normal position into spinal column leading to compression of spinal cord and nerve roots causing symptoms from severe pain upto sensory and motor disturbances.. treatment includes prolonged bed rest, avoid heavy weight lifting, avoid bending, keep changing postures, low back exercises to strengthen back muscles, physiotherapy. If al of these fail to relieve symptoms then next is epidural steroid injection where steroid(Triamcinolone acetonide, Dexamethasone, and Methylprednisolone acetate are commonly used steroids) is injected in epidural space where nerve roots are present. Steroids are anti inflammatory, reduce chemicals causing cause pain and thus alleviate pain. It relieves pain in most of patients.. it's low risk procedure. Caution to be taken if patients have uncontrolled sugars, cardiac failure, or taking blood thinners, anti platelet drugs like aspirin/clopidogrel.. Dear sir you haven't mentioned what heart condition so I suggest you consult your physician once before going for the procedure..
