This type of pain in due to exposure of nerves in tooth. Avoiding brushing will retain more plaque and worsen condition. Oral hygiene needs to be strictly maintained. He can use Colgate pain out gel or simply dab a cotton ball with clove oil over the cut area or insert into cavity. He can use Colgate sensitive pro relief toothpaste for brushing. Brush should be used.
