The duration for which you need to wear your retainer after the completion of your ortho treatment entirely depends the treatment procedure you have undergone. Don't stop using your retainer before consulting your orthodontist. You need to clean you retainer daily else it may affect your oral hygiene.

Just wear it according to the advice of your orthodontist. Generally it is recommended to be worn for 6 months. Clean it twice daily under running water with a soft brush.
Health Tips
“Avoid” cleaning it with hot or warm water as it will distort.
