Your mother is suffering from a disease known as osteoporosis where the bones become fragile. As mentioned by you, there’s an increased risk of fracture including that of the hip or the spinal vertebra which can be significantly debilitating. Both the injections mentioned by you are used in treatment of osteoporosis, but they are of two different classes. Inj Rockbone is available as a pre-filled pen (similar to insulin) which needs to be taken daily whereas inj Zolendronic acid is given as an IV infusion usually once a year. In both cases you can expect the treating doctor to add calcium and vitamin D3 supplements to augment the therapy. The treatment of osteoporosis usually takes time for clinical improvement to happen.
Next Steps
Consult an endocrinologist regarding her diabetes control. She should undergo a bone mineral density scan to evaluate her bone quality. Usually both above injections can be given together since one is given daily and the other is annually. You can review with Orthopaedic surgeon for the same.
Health Tips
Patients with osteoporosis are at high risk of fractures known as fragility fractures. Ensure that her room and house is well lit, with no obstacles over which a person can trip and fall. It’s useful to install hand rails in the bathroom/toilet since majority of the trivial falls happen in the bathroom. Exposure to morning sun and some form of regular activity like morning walk is advisable.
