Pain when insertion of finger

Im an 18 year old girl and i have never penetrated any object or finger into my vagina, yet. I do masturbate and i have tried putting one finger in but it felt very uncomfortable and hurt a little bit. Then, when my boyfriend tried to put a finger in, it hurt when he slowly tried going in. He managed to put only a tiny bit (till the end of a nail) inside. Is this normal? i know pain is normal but i just need a gynaecologists point of view on this.
