I would like to enlighten you in brief regarding hair loss and the best treatment available. Androgenetic alopecia or common baldness is more common problem in males than females. It affects almost more than 90% of males by age of 25-30 years and around 50% females by age of 30 years. The severity of hair loss and pattern varies from one individual to other. Reasons for this type of hair loss is genetic and hormonal[due to androgens]. There are many treatments available but none of the treatment is successfull in all patients. Recently, one of the treatment which has been very successfull in all the patients is called prp [platelet rich plasma]. What is prp? Platelet rich plasma is the use of a person' s own blood platelets to enhance hair growth as a stand-alone treatment or to improve the recovery and results of hair transplant surgery. A small sample of blood is obtained from the patient. This sample is processed in an centrifuge device to separate the platelets and plasma from other components like red blood cells. Platelets may then be? activated? releasing powerful molecules which have profound biologic effects on hair follicles and skin. Under comfortable local anesthesia, this powerful cocktail of growth factors, cytokines and other proteins is painlessly injected into the area of scalp under local anesthesia where weak hair follicles exist. Microneedling of the skin is performed immediately following the injection to activate the platelets. The comfortable, outpatient procedure takes less than one hour to perform and patients may resume all activities, including workouts, shampooing, etc. Immediately afterwards as there is no recovery phase. Mild soreness and redness of the scalp, if any, resolves in less than a day and improved hair growth can be measured in a matter of weeks. Is all prp the same? unfortunately not, and this is where it can get confusing for patients (and physicians!). The method of prp preparation followed at our clinic has been standardized over years of experience to provide best results with no side effects. The number of sessions done for each patient varies with the severity of hair fall. Usually 3-6 sessions of prp with 9-12 sessions of microneedling is sufficient for excellent results in every patient. Total duration of the treatment varies from 3-4 months. Cost of the treatment depends on the qualification of doctor and the area where treatment is being performed. I hope the above you can utilize the above information and take well informed decision for your treatment. All the best.
