Most probable cause at this age is osteoarthritis... It's a degenerative bone disease...There’s no cure for osteoarthritis as yet, but there are a number of treatments that can help ease symptoms and reduce the chances arthritis becoming worse...options are analgesics, NSAIDs,intraosseous steroid injection and hyaluronic acid injections,Physiotherapy like strengthening exercises etc ... Treatment depends upon the stage...I would suggest you to consult nearest orthopedic surgeon they will do the needful.

As yr father's X ray shows reduced gap bet'the jt, then it is age related osteoarthritis,(OA)This is degenerative changes occurred in the jt due to age n being a weight bearing jt. ( with ht of 5'3" n 100 kg wt ) it can happen to any one at his age. Any treatment or medicines will give relief for time being. For now u can give him knee cap n for pain locally he can apply any gel very gently. Remember gel should not be rub vigorously like Iodex it should be apply very gently just for less than a 1 minute. He can also do hot or cold fomentation.
