Dear mam It is not recommended to alter or reduce the medication without consulting your psychiatrist. The medications that is prescribed for medication depends on a lot of factors like the duration of illness, severity of symptoms, any side effects that is experienced as well as the response to medication. Since your psychiatrist is aware of your mother's history in detail, he/ she is the best person to suggest medications.. After first episode of depression, it is recommended to continue medicines for at least 6 months and then gradually reduce the dose under supervision. The medications used for depression usually do not hand any long term side effect.. Thanks Regards Dr Ankita Mishra
