Folic acid doubts

My wife is conceived for 6 weeks now.. Doctor was recommending to take becousils tablet for 2 months which was before pregnancy..then after confirming pregnancy now she has advised my wife to take becadexamine tablet as it contains minerals and folic acid... My issue is my wife is 6 weeks pregnant...and separately she is not using any folic acid...is that cause defects to my baby..kindly help
