Fluid in lungs
My father met with an accident and had undergone open splenectomy. 1 week after the surgery there is fluid accumulation in lungs. Other symptoms include fever with chills. Also WBC count trended from 25000 to 15000 to 18000 to 14000 in 4 consequtive days. What can be the reasons for the situation and what kind of diagnosis is required?

Your father could have post operative pneumonia and fluid collection because of that. Chest Xray would be the first investigation to diagnose it. However depeding on the patient’s condition, response to treatment, amount of fluid in the chest, etc further tests like HRCT chest, pleural fluid tapping etc may be required.

Fluid commonly occurs in the pleural post abdominal trauma and surgery of the abdomen. WBC counts fluctuating can be due to infection or related to splenic surgery.
