Peripheral oedema (oedema or swelling of foot and hand) can be due to various reasons
Based on your age we would have to rule out various causative factor:

To rule out causative factor following are the test:
1) Cardiac disorder (heart disorder):
a) Colour Doppler study (study of flow of blood in blood vessels of your legs (both arteries and veins)
b) 2D-Echocargiography to rule out congestive heart disease.
2) Kidney disorder: Renal function test
Serum creatinine, serum urea, uric acid, blood urea nitrogen.
3) Endocrinal disease:
Thyroid function test (T3, T4, TSH)
