If your number is stable, you can go for LASIK or any other refractive surgery depending upon the thickness of cornea and other parameters. -5.5 is not so weak. It is moderate myopia.

You can consult local ophthalmologist who will do a couple of tests to assess the thickness of your cornea and suggest accordingly what kind of refractive surgery is appropriate for your eye.

Whether you're fit for LASIK or no, depends on the fitness, which can be decided only after proper eye examination and scans
This number generally doesn't worsen with age.
