I had a habit of chewing the skin near near my fingernails for over a couple year. I have stopped doing it anymore but the skin I uses to bite has now become very hard. And now it feels like I should chew the hard bits. Will the skin ever be soft again or will it remain like this forever? Thank you

The skin around my fingernails is dry and scaly and in some fingers there is a slight skin overgrowth under the tip of the nail. I have tried using cortisone and antifungar creams on it and it is not getting better. The nails on top look completely normal so I don’t even know if it is a fungal infection. Please help!
