I have had my bonded retainer for a couple of months and the top wire has detached half-way from my upper teeth. My next appointment is in four days (can't make it sooner), and I don't know whether to try remove it or leave it?

If the retainer has come out half way you might be having difficulty in chewing and speaking. I advise you to get it removed first and then your orthodontist will be able to bind a new one for you. If you are unable to get appointment from your orthodontist any general dentist can help you for the time being so that you don't end up having ulcers
Next Steps
Go to any general dentist near to you. He/She will remove the retainer.get anew one bonded from your orthodontist the next time you see him
