Use of steroid in urticaria

2021-06-16 03:29:24
My wife aged 60 is having urticaria since last 15 days and as per advice of dermatologist, steroid treatment ( 16 mg daily ) along with anti histamine and anti allergic has been started since last 6-7 days. She has also been advised to take Pentop 40 etc to take care of gastric issues. she is non diabetic. My quarry is that "Is steroid use is safe as we have been hearing a lot about the problems associated with steroid administration during the recent COVID scenario. How long such steroids may be safely taken and also, what are the precautions, one should take while on steroid administration." Is there any line of treatment, other than steroids administration, to treat urticaria problem.

In acute urticaria steroids are given only when it's very severe and not getting  controlled by antihistamines. It is given usually for a short period like 7-10 days, then stopped. It is safe if given for short duration of time. Mainstay for urticaria treatment is antihistamines.
Next Steps
consult a dermatologist.

Urticaria can be treated in many ways, first line is antihistamines, if not controlled with these we give short dose of steroids as a second line. Short dose of 1 to 2 weeks of steroids does not harm you. There are other treatments also but before starting those get a proper diagnosis on the type of urticaria as it can be of multiple types.
Next Steps
consult a dermatologist for proper evaluation
