Dear human, I can understand that lack of sleep can cause discomfort, and I appreciate that you have decided to ask help for this. I’d like to tell you that big and small changes in life, stress, and uncertainty can cause this disruption. Taking therapy can equip you with ways of dealing with life problems and help you understand yourself better.
As you have mentioned, overthinking might be a reason why you haven’t been able to sleep. I can suggest the following few ways that can you help you tackle this problem, along with some other ways that might help you get the rest your mind and body require:
1. Journaling- devote exclusive and limited time to your thoughts. Give what's running on your mind dedicated time and address it by writing these thoughts down, drawing or painting your feelings about these thoughts, or simply doodling.
2. Meditation: Meditation, breathing exercises, and mindfulness can help manage stress. There are meditation apps, youtube channels, podcasts that can help you practice guided meditation. A mindfulness technique you can use before bed is- lie down still on your back- take your time, get comfortable and notice your breathing. Gradually, starting from your feet and moving upwards just take notice of your body parts (notice how it feels, if there’s any strain or an itch, feel the wind or the lack of it).
3. Exercise- removing excessive energy can not only tire out your body but also calm your mind. You can try and spend 15-20 minutes doing basic stretching and cardio exercises at home.
