Possible Causes
Muscle twitching and leg pain are most commonly linked to dehydration, overexertion, electrolyte imbalances, or even stress or excessive caffeine.
Foul taste/breath and throat mucus may result from reflux (GERD), postnasal drip due to mild allergies or sinusitis, or poor oral hygiene.
Intermittent heartburn is often due to acid reflux, which can also lead to foul taste and throat discomfort.
Medication history (now normal
vitamin D and
B12) suggests recent deficiency—these can sometimes contribute to similar symptoms but are now excluded.
Recommended Tests
Electrolytes (including sodium, potassium,
calcium, magnesium): To rule out mineral imbalances that may cause muscle symptoms.
CBC: May reveal anemia or infection, which could explain nonspecific symptoms like leg pain or fatigue.
Liver Function Tests (
LFT): Useful if general symptoms persist, to rule out metabolic causes.
Thyroid Function Tests: Can be considered if symptoms persist, as hypothyroidism can rarely present with similar muscle and throat symptoms.
Only consider iron studies if there is evidence of anemia on CBC or symptoms like fatigue and pallor.
Next Steps
Hydrate well and ensure a balanced diet with adequate
electrolytes.
Maintain oral hygiene and avoid trigger foods (spicy, acidic, late-night eating).
If symptoms persist or worsen (progressive weakness, persistent heartburn, persistent cough, significant weight loss), consult a physician for detailed evaluation, including the above blood tests and possibly ENT or gastroenterology referral.
Health Tips
Symptoms are most likely benign, but unresolving or worsening symptoms may require further workup.
Red flag symptoms such as progressive muscle weakness, persistent unexplained weight loss, blood in vomit or stools, or persistent severe pain should prompt urgent medical evaluation.
