Sudden stinging pain lower abdomen left

I was lying down and suddenly started experiencing a sharp pain as if someone is stabbing me from the inside in the lower abdomen(below the stomach) on the left. It was excruciating and very painful and it lasted for quite long. I have experienced pain in the region but never this bad. Kindly guide.
