Subject:Chronic loose stools 1 to 2 time

2026-09-12 02:28:03
Hello Doctor, for the past 1 year, I have been passing loose stools 1 to 2 times every morning. The frequency is normal (only 1-2 times), but the consistency of the stool is completely loose.I do not have any fever, there is no blood in my stool, and I do not experience any gas or bloating. I have noticed a clear pattern with my diet: green vegetables and fruits do not suit me at all and worsen the loose stools immediately. However, I can easily digest milk, ghee, and wheat roti without any issues. Since this loose stool issue has been persistent for a full year, please guide me on what could be causing this and what diagnostic tests I should get done. Thank you."

Loose stools continuing for a year need evaluation rather than diet changes alone. Please get stool routine/microscopy, CBC, thyroid and coeliac screening; further tests depend on findings. Keep a symptom/food diary and avoid unsafe water, excess caffeine and sugar-free sweeteners. Arrange a Practo consultation so I can review the pattern and reports and guide treatment.

Hello. Chronic loose stools lasting for a year—specifically triggered by fruits and green vegetables while tolerating dairy and wheat—points toward a functional or malabsorptive dietary intolerance rather than an acute infection. Because green leafy vegetables are high in insoluble fiber and certain fruits are rich in fermentable short-chain carbohydrates (FODMAPs like fructose and sorbitol), they can draw excess water into the bowel lumen through osmotic action and speed up gut transit, causing unformed stools. Common possibilities include: 1)Fructose or Dietary Polyol Intolerance: Poor absorption of natural fruit sugars causing osmotic fluid retention. 2)Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Diarrhea (IBS-D): Gut hypersensitivity to high-roughage insoluble fiber. 3)Bile Acid Diarrhea or Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO): Disruptions in how nutrients and fats/acids are processed in the proximal gut. The absence of blood, fever, nocturnal diarrhea, significant weight loss, or pain is reassuring and makes an active inflammatory bowel pathology less likely.
Next Steps
1) Initial Diagnostic Workup : a) Routine and microscopic Stool Examination (to rule out occult blood, ova, cysts, or chronic giardiasis). b) Complete Blood Count (CBC), ESR/CRP (to check for underlying systemic inflammation or occult anemia). c) Thyroid Function Tests (TSH, Free T4) to evaluate for hyperthyroid-induced gut hypermotility. 2) Consult a Gastroenterologist/ physician:  A formal in-person or detailed video consultation is advisable to correlate these baseline lab findings and assess whether a hydrogen breath test (for sugar malabsorption/SIBO) or stool fecal calprotectin is warranted. 3) Structured Dietary Trial: Temporarily lower raw insoluble roughage and excess high-fructose fruits. Shift toward well-cooked, peeled vegetables and low-FODMAP fruit portions (e.g., bananas) to see if stool consistency solidifies.
Health Tips
1) Avoid Over The Counter Anti-Diarrheals:Do not take antimicrobials (such as norfloxacin-tinidazole combos) or motility stoppers without a clear indication, as chronic use alters the gut microbiome. 2) Red flag Symptoms: Seek prompt medical evaluation if you notice fresh or dark blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, low-grade fevers, or bowel movements that regularly wake you up from sleep at night.
