Sleep pattern

2026-09-26 06:16:20
My baby is 50 days old and hardly sleeps for 5–6 hours in 24 hours. She has 7+ wet nappies a day, and her current weight is 3.9 kg (birth weight was 2.4 kg). During pregnancy, her head size was measuring about 2weeks behind her gestational age, and at birth her head circumference was 32 cm. I’m a little concerned about her sleep and would like to understand what could be causing her to sleep so little. Could you please advise if this is normal for her age or if she needs to be checked?

At this age, there is considerable individual variation, but 5 hours total/24 h is unusually low. First confirm the actual sleep Parents sometimes count only the periods when the baby is placed in the cot and miss: * Short naps while feeding * Sleeping while being held * Dozing during breastfeeding/bottle feeding Keep a 24-hour sleep and feeding diary for 1–2 days. Look for associated causes Assess for: * Hunger/poor feeding or inadequate milk intake * Reflux or excessive crying/colic * Fever or infection * Nasal obstruction * Excessive stimulation/noisy environment * Medication/caffeine exposure * Pain or other illness

Usually infants of 50 day duration could sleep for 10-14 hrs but varies as they could sleep taking very short naps accumulating to about 10 hrs of sleep. If you find it less than this check if baby is overstimulated being fussy continuously.weight gain and number of diapers is reassuring. Calm quiet space for sleep if required with minimal white noise and demand feeding rather than scheduled feed if you find baby is well asleep can help.

Greetings newborn sleep durations are highly variable, a total of 5 to 6 hours of sleep in 24 hours is significantly lower than the standard infant range of 14 to 17 hours. However, her regular wet diapers and excellent weight gain (gaining 1.5 kg from birth) indicate that she is receiving adequate nutrition and hydration. Possibilities for this low sleep could include environmental overstimulation, an underdeveloped circadian rhythm, or a maternal miscalculation of total accumulated sleep throughout the day. Alternatively, conditions like infant reflux or silent discomfort might be keeping her awake. Potential solutions include implementing a consistent wind-down routine, optimizing a dark sleep environment, or using gentle motion/swaddling.

At 50 days old, babies usually sleep well over ten hours in a day. Sleeping only 5 to 6 hours total is worth getting checked rather than watched at home. Her wet nappies and weight gain from 2.4 kg to 3.9 kg are reassuring signs that she's feeding and hydrating well.
Next Steps
Please take her to her paediatrician to review this sleep pattern along with her head circumference trend since birth.
Health Tips
Don't wait to see if her sleep improves on its own, since this much of a gap from typical newborn sleep is best assessed in person.
