Side effects of ECT

I suffer from Depression and Anxiety. My psychiatrist suggested Electro Convulsive therapy ( ECT). I have taken 6 sessions of ECT so far. 3 sessions in a span of 10 days. And after a couple of months, 3 sessions in a span of 2 months. I feel that I became forgetful and I'm not able to analyze anything properly. Do ECT sessions affect the intellectual abilities of a person? If yes then how can I remedy my situation?

Hi.. though ECT causes memory deficits they are not permanent. Please consult your treating Psychiatist and discuss the same. May be the frequency is to be decreased.

ECT can cause memory decline, with cognitive retraining it can be improved. Consult your treating psychiatrist for the same and seek remedial measures.

ECT is a very safe procedure with proven benefits in several psychiatric disorders. There can be some temporary memory and cognitive problems which should resolve within few weeks. If they dont please consult your psychiatrist for further advise and treatment.
