Ring finger has swell

My wife has swelling on Ring finger nail. It's been almost 5 days. She has pain when touching. Please suggest treatment.

Painful swelling and redness around the nail fold for five days is typically acute paronychia, an infection of the skin beside the nail, often after a manicure or nail biting. Soak the finger in warm salt water for ten minutes three times a day, keep the hand elevated, and avoid pressing or pricking the area. A topical antibacterial ointment and a simple painkiller usually help; if pus has collected, it needs a small drainage procedure rather than tablets alone. Spreading redness, throbbing pain, fever, or diabetes make early review important. Please book a consultation so the finger can be examined and, if needed, the collection drained safely.

Underneath nail it looks like pus collection. If she is diabetic, then she needs small incision and drainage of pus followed by higher dose antibiotics and other treatment. If she is not diabetic a short course of antibiotics would help.  If she is having fever, even then I would recommend I&D, coz it will heal wound faster.

Seems like an abscess. She can take tab cefixime 200mg one morning and one evening for 5days. Tab ibuprofen 400mg one morning, afternoon and evening for 5 days, after meals. Tab pantaprazole 40mg one daily before breakfast for 5 days. She should do some cold compression 2 to 3 times daily and warm compression twice daily.. Either it will resolve or grow more, in which case a single incision will cure it.

Hi, thank you for sharing the details and photo. From what you’ve described — swelling around the ring fingernail for 5 days with pain on touching — this looks like it could be a paronychia, which is an infection of the skin around the nail. It can be caused by bacteria or fungus, especially if there was any minor cut, manicure, or exposure to water/soap. Since it’s been 5 days and there is pain, I recommend she *takes an appointment* with me so I can examine it in person and decide if she needs oral antibiotics, a topical ointment, or if drainage is required. Please do not try to squeeze or pop it at home. For now: - Keep the area clean and dry - Avoid harsh soaps, chemicals, and picking at the nail - You can do warm water soaks 10-15 min, 2-3 times a day to help with pain and swelling Please take an appointment soon so we can start the right treatment and prevent it from worsening. Let me know a convenient time. Take care.
